Abstract

This article identifies and rebuilds, within the attempts toward pro-continental union in Latin America, a set of practices and representations that make up a historical cycle that is called here "Latino Americanism from below." Fathered by fi gures initially linked to literary modernis, and intensifi ed after the outbreak of the University Reform of 1918, this movement has been characterized by having emerged from fi gures that acted from outside (and sometimes against) the state elites. This cycle, which fi nds its apogee in the 1920s, comes into decline after 1930.
