This article discusses the contributions of pioneer researchers of Chilean Andean ethnohistory. To meet this goal, first I explain the appearance of this scientific practice in Chile under the general development of the Andean ethnohistory. This provides a framework to examine some early publications that have been claimed as ethnohistorical and whose contributions are the central subject of this article. Finally, I summarize the outstanding features of this investigations and I compare them to the New Ethnohistory that began to develop when the pioneer stage closed.
