In this article we study the existing projects for the establishment in the capital of Virreinato del Río de la Plata of a “Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País”, one of the most characteristic institutions of the Spanish American Enlightenment. It is striking that, being Buenos Aires one of the most benefited jurisdictions by the Bourbon reforms and, by counting -unlike other american capital cities- with an active illustrated group since the late eighteenth century, these projects have been unsuccessful. We try to offer some hypotheses of the reasons for this failure.
