What defines a historical event? Understanding the past and the life of social communities

Abstract

In this work we will investigate the characteristics that define a historical event. To do this we will distinguish the two aspects that can be identified in consideration of its historical condition: the way in which the social community recognizes and signifies a specific event as such, and the way in which historical science takes it for its object. We will first make a general approach to the very idea of the event, then we will ask ourselves the question of how events are endowed with meaning and transmitted from generation to generation. Finally, we will return to the problem of defining an event, for which we will consider the linguistic dimension that informs that historical object.
